SPOKANE, Wash. -A 20-year-old man who was involved in an early morning DUI crash is on his way to recovery.
" I was surprised that I wasn't dead honestly," said Brayden Whiteside. "I thought I was dying in the car."
Whiteside was the passenger in 20-year-old Chance Quesnell's Kia Optima that was involved in a head-on collision north of Mead early Saturday morning.
Troopers with the Washington State Patrol say 41-year-old Christopher Mcilveen was traveling north in a southbound lane. His Ford F-350 pickup truck slammed into Quesnell's car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
"When I first got here I wished it was me instead of her," said Whiteside. "I just don't know why she was the one who had to pass."
Whiteside was discharged from the hospital Monday afternoon, just hours after Mcilveen was charged with Vehicular Homicide and Vehicular Assault.
Mcilveen's bond was set at $300,000 and is scheduled for an arraignment on November 6th.
The family of Quesnell has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of travel and funeral services. There will be a memorial service for her on Saturday afternoon at the Coeur d'Alene Wedding Chapel and Event Center.
